The El Jem International Symphonic Music Festival uses one of the most extraordinary Roman structures in the world as its stage. The amphitheatre of El Jem — a UNESCO World Heritage site and the third-largest Roman amphitheatre ever built — provides an open-air concert setting that no purpose-built venue can match. El Jem is located between Tunis and Sfax, roughly 200 km south of the capital. Trains on the Tunis-Sfax main line stop at El Jem station, which is a short walk from the amphitheatre.
