Things to Do in Tabarka
Tabarka is on the northwest coast of Tunisia, close to the Algerian border, and is unlike any other Tunisian coastal town. The landscape here — coral reefs, a rocky island fort, cork oak forests, and the Kroumirie mountains rising immediately behind the coast — is specific to this corner of the country. It is one of the best destinations in Tunisia for scuba diving, and the combination of coast and mountain gives it more variety than most beach-focused towns.
Visit the Genoese Fort
The Genoese Fort sits on a rocky island just offshore from Tabarka’s port, connected to the town by a narrow causeway built in 1953. The fort was constructed in the 16th century by the Genoese, who were granted the island by Charles V of Spain in exchange for ransoming the Ottoman admiral Dragut. It served as a trading post and fortified redoubt before being ceded to the Ottoman rulers of Tunisia.
The fort can be walked through; the interior has some interpretation panels covering its history, and the rampart walls give views across the coast and the Kroumirie hills behind. The walk across the causeway alone is worth doing for the sea views.
Entry: approximately 5 TND as of 2026. Opening hours vary seasonally — check locally.
Dive the coral reefs
Tabarka is Tunisia’s best diving destination, and one of the better sites in the western Mediterranean for coral. The reef system here — one of the last healthy red coral populations in the Mediterranean — sits in relatively shallow water (10–40 metres), making it accessible to recreational divers. The reef supports grouper, moray eels, octopus, and significant numbers of sea bream and bass.
Several dive centres operate from the marina. Single-tank dives cost approximately 50–70 TND as of 2026, with equipment rental included. PADI Open Water courses are available for beginners.
Non-divers can snorkel from some of the rockier beaches north of town where the water is clear and the reef begins close to shore.
Walk to Les Aiguilles
Les Aiguilles (The Needles) are a series of dramatic rock pinnacles on the headland east of Tabarka town, formed by coastal erosion of the red sandstone cliffs. The walk from the town centre to the best viewpoint takes about 20 minutes along the coast path. The formations are most photogenic in the late afternoon when the raking light picks out the texture of the rock.
Several of the pinnacles rise 15–20 metres directly from the sea, and the area around them is a good snorkelling spot.
Day trip to Ain Draham
Ain Draham is a mountain town 26 km southeast of Tabarka in the Kroumirie hills, at approximately 800 metres elevation. The setting — surrounded by cork oak forest, with views across forested ridges — is unlike anywhere else in Tunisia. In winter it occasionally sees snow, which makes it a novelty destination for Tunisians from the coastal cities.
The town itself is small, with a market and some hiking trail access. The drive from Tabarka is part of the appeal: the road climbs through dense cork oak forest that turns the landscape distinctly European in character.
Getting there: approximately 30 minutes by car on the GP17. Local taxis from Tabarka to Ain Draham cost approximately 25–35 TND as of 2026.
Day trip to Bulla Regia
Bulla Regia is one of the most unusual Roman sites in the world, located about 70 km southeast of Tabarka near the town of Jendouba. The site is known for its subterranean houses — wealthy Romans built their villas partly underground to escape the summer heat, a solution that created the extraordinary result of intact underground reception rooms with mosaic floors still in place.
The underground summer quarters at Bulla Regia are unique in the Roman world. Several houses are accessible, including the House of the Hunt, with its in-situ hunting mosaic, and the House of Amphitrite. The upper (above-ground) town also survives with a forum, theatre, and baths.
Entry: approximately 8 TND as of 2026. Open Tuesday–Sunday.
Getting there from Tabarka: car is the most practical option (approximately 1 hour). From Jendouba, the site is 7 km on a minor road.
The beach and marina
Tabarka beach is a 2-kilometre arc of sand east of the town, backed by pine trees, with views of the Genoese Fort island. It is one of the nicer beaches in northern Tunisia — the water is cleaner than most of the northeast coast, the setting is more attractive than the resort beaches further south, and it is relatively uncrowded outside July and August.
The marina has a handful of restaurants and cafés with waterfront terrace seating, and is the place to book boat excursions or confirm diving arrangements.
Tabarka Jazz and International Festival
Tabarka hosts a summer festival (usually July) that has historically mixed jazz, world music, and traditional Tunisian music in the outdoor amphitheatre setting of the town. Check current listings — festival programming and dates shift year to year.
